Coopers Gap to Winding Stair

Winding Stair to Doublehead Gap

Beautiful area. Once you get up the steep climb to Winding Stair Gap from the south (NF/FS 77, aka Winding Stair Gap Rd), take Nootootley Creek Rd to the northwest, and you will be rewarded with almost 10 miles of downhill that follows the creek (passing Three Forks) to Doublehead Gap Rd. Hang a left on Doublehead Gap Rd for a few miles and another left onto Blue Ridge Wildlife Management road (aka NF 42-3 becoming "13123" becoming NF 42), headed south and eventually east to Winding Stair Gap. This climb back up to Winding Stair Gap from the north side is much more gradual and didn't feel that bad. Once you get to the top of Winding Stair Gap, hang a right to head south down NF/FS 77, and be ready for blinding speeds down the southside of Winding Stair Gap.

90 CFS (2.9 ft) is too low. Hard on the canoes. Alot of scraping, not fun. Took 4 hrs to get from Hwy 52 put-in, "A", to Castleberry takeout, "B". GPS track
