Garmin Motionbased or Garmin Connect Workaround
From 4LPH41337.com
One of the most noticeable drawbacks to me is the inability of the Garmin Oregon or Nuvi series to upload directly to Garmin's MotionBased.com or Garmin Connect websites (as of 12/17/2009 no longer an issue). These websites are great for tracking your training and sharing routes with friends. You can also "dot race" you friend, if they follow the same route.
The workaround to this is to connect the GPS unit to your desktop, then save the Current.gpx file to your desktop, open it in gpx editing software (I use Garmin's MapSource software (free download)), save just the track you want to upload into a new file (or delete all the extra stuff), and upload it manually here Garmin's MotionBased Manual Upload site. Or for Garmin Connect go to "Upload" -> "Manual Upload"
It's a bit of a pain, but supposedly, Garmin is working to automate this (but they seem to move slowly for their devices that aren't deemed "fitness" devices)...
Update: 12/17/2009 Garmin Connect website now supports several "non-fitness" GPS devices, including the Garmin Oregon series! Click on your device on their website to get specific instructions, but for the Oregon, remember to Reset Trip Computer / Data at the beginning and end of your activity recording. Then when you plug it in and go to the upload page, it will show all activities for upload. Works great! If you forget to reset your trip computer before and after, you can still use this work around to edit the bad data out of your track and upload it manually.
