Blister Prevention
- Each test tested via 10 mile hike through Dawson Forest
[edit]
Test 1
- Clean both heels with alcohol. Didn't have any cotton balls, so just used tissue.
- Wrapped both heels with tape. Run tape in a horseshoe shape, wrapping the heel from the inside of the foot to the outside. Press tape down and over the bottom of the foot, pinching the extra tape together like the corners of a wrapped package. Trim off extra tape folds with fingernail scissors as close to the skin as possible (without cutting yourself). Make sure the edges of the ends of the tape are cut rounded and does not have sharp corners that will likely catch and peel off. Carefully roll socks onto foot, as to not pull of the tape.
- Left heel: Johnson & Johnson cloth medical tape.
- Right heel: Duck (Duct) Tape
[edit]
Results of Test 1
- No blisters on either foot, but the Johnson & Johnson medical tape came loose. The Duck tape stayed put, but left the skin pretty soft (like it was soaking in water). The Duck tape left alot of tape adhesive along the edge of the tape on my foot and was hard to get off. The Duck tape was also not very flexible.
[edit]
Test 2
- Same procedure as test 1, except used cotton balls to clean heel with alcohol. Duck tape worked the first time, so using different tapes that may leave less residue.
- Left heel: Johnson & Johnson cloth medical tape. Started coming off before I completed the right foot.
- Both heels: Nexcare "Absolute Waterproof Tape" by 3M (found at Eckerd's)
[edit]
Results of Test2
- Couple of stream crossings, and the tape came loose.
- Minor blisters
- Used this in the Bull Mt Mock race on the back of heel (higher up where shoe heel cup rubbed a blister), and it worked much better.
